The Kiddie Pool Digest will be back each week with a new fun theme and interesting activities, facts, and bits from around the web for curious kids of all ages.
Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon on July 20th, 1969 and then spent two and a half hours making footprints on a surface no foot had ever touched. Not a bad way to spend a summer afternoon. So, on this July 20th, let's celebrate the innovation and curiosity of the men and women who've given us a close up to space, that mysteriously cool world beyond our own.

Very carefully, with Mr. Miyagi finesse, open each Oreo so the cream is intact on one side.Using this diagram carefully scrape the cream center of each Oreo with plastic knife or butter knife to look like the eight phases of the moon: First Quarter, Waxing Crescent, New Moon, Waning Crescent, Third Quarter, Waning Gibbous, Full Moon, Waxing GibbousArrange Oreos in the order listed above in a circle on your white construction paper going clockwise.Glue down and label each phase.Optional: Draw an earth to go in the center for your Oreo moons to orbit!
Really, we could "moon" over any constellation this week, but let's celebrate the heroes of space with Perseus, the mythical Greek hero who defeated Medusa with his trusty sword. The Perseid Meteor shower is one of the biggest and brightest and can be seen in the northern hemisphere between mid-July to the end of August.

Our family vacations—as cheap and tiring as they have been—have made my kids empathetic, curious, and open-minded world travelers, and this makes me proud.
Babies are born with curiosity. The best toys tap into that inquisitive spirit—helping them explore the world and build skills and confidence along the way.
The energy and chaos of running around on the playground isn't the break all kids need during the school day. Introverts may do well to have an alternative.
